Pinot Noir is the major red grape variety of the Burgundy region, it is very popular in France but also in Switzerland and it is the main grape in red wines. It is Philippe le Hardi, Duke of Burgundy, who imposed the culture of pinot noir. It is found in the Champagne, Loire Valley, Jura, Savoie, Alsace and of course Burgundy regions.
The choice of the pinot noir is due to its aromatic qualities but it’s also a problematic grape. His early budding makes it sensitive to frost, so it is mainly planted on hillsides with calcareous soils in temperate climates.
This is an early maturing variety whereby its quality, results in a relatively low yield, it offers red wines with a beautiful color and is extremely aromatic; ageing very well and may be kept for periods extending over various decades. Pinot Noir has a low concentration of sugars and alcohol and its tannins are especially silky.
The Romanée-Conti vineyard is planted exclusively with Pinot Noir, as well as the Henri Jayer and  Liger Belair domains, as well as many of the best Burgundy properties.
It is also the only red grape permitted in Alsace, and is now found in Oregon, Australia and New Zealand.
