Domaine Zind Humbrecht was founded in 1959 as a result of association between Geneviève Zind and Léonard Humbrecht. These two domaines, that were completely independent until that day, unite in 1960 to create a single domaine of about 5 hectares. Today domaine Zind-Humbrecht occupies 41,1 hectares, situated in 6 different villages: Turckheim (19,8 ha), Wintzenheim (7,3 ha), Hunawihr (6 ha), Thann (5,5 ha), Gueberschwihr (2,2ha), Niedermorschwihr (0,3 ha).

Since 1620 the Humbrecht family has passed from father to son the culture of growing the vineyard on the vast terroirs of Alsace.
Léonard Humbrecht will quickly adapt the fundamental principles of wine making: the use of big tuns, natural yeast and manual wine gathering… But the choice between the industrial and high-quality production shall be made with ease by domaine Zind Humbrecht.

In 1989 Olivier Humbrecht and his wife Margareth arrive. It was some sort of a new beginning for the domaine.
They decide to abandon Wintzenheim and move to Turckheim in 1992 where they build the state-of-the-art winery.

In their continuous search of high quality, the domaine obtains BIO certificate in 1998 and it’s exactly at that moment that they start to apply biodynamics.
But it doesn’t begin and end there, they get back to animal traction to preserve the soils and respect ancestral traditions in order to produce the outstanding-quality wine.
The wine selection is vast and the differences can be noticed from one village to another: we find a rather volcanic terroir in Thann, a granite one in Turckheim, a clay-limestone one in Hunawihr, or even a gypsum one for Clos Jebsal, et cetera…

Domaine Zind Humbrecht is now turning towards less concentrated wines in order to head to more harmonious nectars of incomparable quality!
Domaine Zind Humbrecht is on the list of must-visit vineyards of Alsace region!

The vineyards have been cultivated since the middle ages in the monasteries of Burgundy, the whole region is ingrained in the soil and influenced by traditions.
For many decades now chemistry is applied in this culture, the French vineyards consume alone 20% of pesticides!
Some wine makers refuse this alternative and work in a different way. Jean-Claude Rateau evokes the nature, «plants are fed by the roots, that’s where they get the energy and that’s why we have to respect the vitality of soil and its’ microbiological wealth ».
Biodynamics excludes the use of chemical products, but it doesn’t stop there, thanks to the use of organic matter like cow dung or herbal and mineral preparations.
But all this is not enough, it’s all about a certain vision of nature and compliance with the cycles of Lunar Calendar, kind of return to the roots!
In Puligny –Montrachet, Anne Claude Leflaive of domaine Leflaive, composes the world famous Chevallier-Montrachet or Bâtard –Montrachet bottles. She follows the principles of biodynamics, defends her ideas and sprays natural preparations on the vineyards in the smallest amounts as a source of energy.
In Mâconnais, Pierre Masson composes biodynamic infusions and preparations. This experienced farmer among the other preparations uses cow-horn manure, a trend preparation in biodynamics, that, when in the soil, transforms manure into a very rich humus. And he doesn’t stop at his numerous great activities, he also edits the Lunar and Planetary Calendar and determines, depending on the position of stars in the constellations, the most favorable days to work in the vineyards.
Many wine makers in Burgundy are now applying biodynamics at different levels. Bearing in mind that biodynamics will not make a better wine, but will offer a cleaner and more noble wine culture, infuse greater quality, make it more fruity and, above all, give it a greater expression of terroir.

And, inexorably, the wines produced in such a way, will enchant the palates of the amateurs of petit and grand crus so dear to French cultural heritage.

The name of Hermitage “La Chapelle” is linked to the little chapel of Saint-Christophe above the vineyard terraces overlooking the Rhone river.
In 1834 Antoine Jaboulet builds his house in Tain Hermitage in the Rhone valley.
Since then, from father to son, the family works passionately on Syrah, growing on the iconic Hermitage hill. They produce strong and thoroughbred wines on the most beautiful soils in the north of the region.
Both the Domaine and the cuvée La Chapelle are iconic, making the biggest and the rarest bottles in the world.
The outputs are very confidential, remaining always below 15 hectoliters/hectare.
The admirable maturing in barrels lasts over 18 months.

The Knight of Sterimberg passed once by « La Chapelle » on the Hermitage hill. The 1961 vintage bottle was among the 12 most beautiful bottles of the 20th century.

This unique terroir, property of Jaboulet family, is, in fact, a blend of different terroirs – the strength of Bessards, the aroma precision of Greffieux, the opulence of Méal and the delicacy of Rocoules.

The 1990 vintage is considered to be the worthy successor of the great 1961.
The tasting of this vintage inspired great amateurs of wine, professionals – i’d say,or even even poets to write several lines of description…

The exceptional quality of this wine starts with this magnificent ruby color – full, clear and of marvelous brightness reflecting all the youth and charm of this vintage. The nose opens up easily to reveal light aroma of black fruit and sweet spice. In several seconds, the wine closes up to wake up half an hour later. At that moment a surprising complexity appears almost making you lose your references. The wine is incredibly young, it reveals its freshness though fruit aromas making you believe it’s only several years old. But this wine reveals itself on the palate with strength and structure making it somehow similar to its elder brother of 1961. Its significant and strong tannic structure leads the tasting to a frank and dynamic wine. The tannin adjusts during the tasting to become remarkable and velvety. The mid-palate is generous thanks to clean and strong aromes brought by Syrah while the wine develops its long-lasting, ample and delicate taste.

Ruby red, great saturation, still young. The wine is still a bit closed on the nose but has a very deep and complex aroma, its character is essentially harsh; it seems that the wine wants to remain silent and keep its secrets but with some patience we manage to get some smoke, bacon, strawberry and mineral expressions – just arguments becoming more and more precise and articulate in the process of wine oxidation. By supple attack the wine palate rolls on a close-knit fabric with fine and noble finishing, its reserved appearance has a difficulty to hide all the energy and sun of the vintage while the wine deploys a majestic final, liberating all the complexity and personality with nuances of plum, licorice, spices and dark chocolate.

A great wine that we will be able to appreciate during the next decades, until 2050, if we are patient enough!

Merlot is a red wine grape variety that appeared in the 18th century in southwestern France, and more specifically in the north of Aquitaine area.
In general, it is planted on fresh clay-limestone soils. It regularly needs water and barely supports droughts. It is mostly found on its favorite terroir, in Pomerol and St. Emilion. By the way, it is referenced in a well-known château Pétrus, consisting 95% of merlot.

Merlot is well-adapted to moderate climates and prefers hot summers. However, it is less adapted to early spring frosts, mostly due to its thin skin.
Merlot grapes are small and black. They are characterized by a very dark color and fine density. The flavors are those of red berries (strawberry, raspberry, cherry and currant). With age, the flavors change to prune, spices, leather and undergrowth.

In the mouth, Merlot is characterized by supple tanins, strong taste, rather high alcohol content and dark color.
Merlot wine is a near-perfect red wine, a structured one, revealing much complexity and rich maturing capacity. It makes a good mix with cabernet sauvignon. You can find it in multiple fine wines of Bordeaux.

Thanks to its flexibility, Merlot grows in Languedoc, as well as in Northern America, Chili, Italy and Central Europe.
In France it occupies the surface of 115000 hectares, compared to 25000 in 1968.
Merlot is a grape variety which is used only for wine production.

For all those who are still not carried away by an investment in grand cru wines, here’s one more example that should make you change your mind!

An auction, presented by Sotheby’s, took place in Hong Kong last Saturday.
An exceptional lot of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti has reached a new record equal to $14000 a bottle.
The lot consisted of 114 bottles of Romanée-Conti, 6 bottles of each vintage between 1992 and 2010. A unique opportunity to acquire such an important lot – the most desired wine in the world.

Romanée-Conti became the most expensive wine in the world that has ever been sold at auction, the lot breaking any sale record.

Till that day the record belonged to Château Mouton Rothschild 1982. A lot of 50 cases was sold in New York in 2006 at one hell of a price – 1,05 million dollars.

This auction was the first of the autumn session, the sale rates reaching 96%, 50% of the lots were sold well above their estimates.
The lot of Romanée Conti was acquired by an Asian collector whose name was not disclosed.
With this new sale record, the price of one glass of Romanée Conti would reach $2353, equal to 1870 € (still a little bit expensive for a glass of wine)!

One more time the market demonstrates that fine wines, getting better with time, acquire added value. Their price continues to rise and only the wealthiest buyers will be able to pay themselves a lot like this one day.

The wheel of Fortune goes round and after two difficult vintages, the 2014 harvest seems to be a relief for Burgundy producers – both for its quantity and quality.

Most of the Burgundy wine producers have started grape harvest in the beginning of last week.

Claude Chevalier, the president of Inter-professional Bureau of Burgundy Wine (BIVB) has stated, after a hard wine harvest session, that the rates of return are close to norm, but significantly lower than the average for the previous vintages.

Chevalier announced that as for his own domaine, domaine Chevalier, located in Lodoix-Serrigny, the grapes are of fine concentration and present a good phenolic maturity. And the most important thing is that there’s plenty of grapes!

Multiple unripe grapes as well as grapes affected by acetic rot with vinegar smell are thrown away from the sorting tables. The rotting process is partly provoked by fruit flies, Drosophiles suzukii, present during the harvest. These flies go crazy about cherries, and the cherry season was long enough for the drosophiles flies to pass from cherries to grapes during the grape harvesting. Moreover, the temperature close to 20°C has favored their presence from August till the wine harvesting time.

Approximately 1,45 million hectolitres are expected from Burgundy region production, from Chablis to Mâcon, which is moderately below average, equal to 1,5 million hectolitres.

This numbers take into account the above-average production of Côte de nuits, but at the same time the lower production of Côte de Beaune and Mâconnais as a result of strong hailstorms in the end of June.

The vintage of this year was expected to be correct but not exceptional due to cold temperatures and frequent rainfalls this summer, but the last three weeks preceding the crop, being sunny and hot, have saved the harvest.

According to Sylvain Pitiot from Clos de Tart in Morey St Denis, 2014 is going to be a very good vintage!

Many domaines had to «clean » the vines and aerate the grapes in order to avoid Botrytis during heavy and multiple rains in August.

The harvests that have ended up around 18-20 September announce the alcohol percentage somewhere between 11,8 and 12,3%.

Apparently, this 2014 vintage is going to surprise us with its extraordinary quality of white wines, which will reflect a good balance between acidity and ripeness.

The 2014 wine harvest made Burgundy wine producers happy with its quantity as well as its quality. And now we have from 12 to 24 weeks until we see these wines bottled and have the opportunity to taste them.

Bonnes Mares, Musigny, Corton Charlemagne – three legendary Grands Crus that fire your imagination…
Chambolle Musigny Premier Cru “Les Amoureuses”, Morey Saint Denis Premier Cru “Clos de la Bussière” – all these irreplaceable Premier Crus!
Domaine Georges Roumier possesses a rich and captivating terroir cultivated with passion and philosophy by Christophe Roumier. Georges Roumier wines are complex – they ally lightness and intensity, charm and long-lasting taste.

But for Christophe Roumier «There is no Roumier style but rather a Roumier philosophy. This unique vinification process that allows to relieve each terroir, each appellation! »
These wines, recognized by their durability and their astonishing youth are still tasted by the amateurs 60 years after their bottling.
Standing aside from the BIO labels confines, Christophe Roumier doesn’t use any chemical inputs (fertilisers or pesticides) during the vine flowering period and lets the plant draw its resources from the exceptional soils.
The privilege is given to old vines (40 years on average). They do not replant, but transplant to ensure a permanent background of old vines and taste characteristics that only the « aged » vines can provide.

For several generations only indigenous yeasts, found in Chambolle-Musigny Domaine fermenting room are used for winemaking.
New barrels are only used for 10% of Premier Crus with a maximum of 35% for Grands Crus: Musigny and Bonnes Mares.
Regardless of the vintage, Domaine Georges Roumier production is limited in its quantity but never in its quality!

Domaine Georges Roumier ranks number 7 according to Wine Searcher «The World’s best, rarest and most expensive wines» classification of 2014!

For example, the 2010 Grands Crus, as each vintage, remain confidential:

– Bonnes-Mares, 5083 bottles, 160 magnums and 5 jéroboams
– Musigny, 40 bottles, 12 magnums
– Corton Charlemagne, 1198 bottles
– Charmes Chambertin, 584 bottles, 6 magnums
– Ruchottes Chambertin, 1274 bottles, 18 magnums

Guardians of ancestral traditions, Domaine Georges Roumier wines are pure, rare and slowly-maturing with wisdom and serenity to deliver the best of the Burgundy region.

For the Burgundy winemakers, 2013 will have been a fret-full vintage! After a trying 2012 harvest, they are confronted to hail and disease, in other words to the mishaps of to-day’s climatic conditions.

Not a single burgundy vineyard was spared in 2013. The harvested quantities are a reflection of this difficult vintage, and hence extremely small as in 2012.

Not withstanding, on tasting, much more positive aspects are revealed. Once again, the hard labor of the winemakers and their experience will have paid off.

The red wines

The red wines present a deep and brilliant red ruby hue. On the olfactory side the nose is transported by the freshness of red fruits (blackberry, raspberry and cherry). And now for the taste buds! One find’s well-balanced wines with fine tannins and a few tangy notes as well as being long tasting in the mouth.

The white wines

The white wines present to the nose, a balanced fruity essence with citrus notes, a beautiful freshness and vivacity. The acidity is good; the wines are well-balanced, excellent news for a difficult harvest.

The extremely wealthy Silicon Valley American entrepreneur, Michael Baum, has château Pommard is composed of 50 acres of vines, a gastronomic restaurant, a museum dedicated to the wine and the vine and an art gallery dedicated to Dali or Miro.

But it’s also an 80 000 bottle production of Château Pommard, of which, 20 000 bottles are of the Clos du Château, to top it all up, 35 000 visitors per year! It is one of the top oenotouristic spots of the Côte d’Or area. With a 6 million Euro annual turnover, the Château Pommard aged over 300 years, is also a symbol of the Burgundy area, and part of France’s heritage.
It belonged to the Laplanche family since 1936; the founder of MGM Constructors, Maurice Giraud, bought the château in 2003. He was the person that created this great art gallery on the Grand crus circuit.
It was during a visit by a fifty year old American, Michael Baum, founder amidst others of founder.org that had a real crush for “this magical place” as he underlined himself.
Domains and Châteaux that are part of France’s heritage are being increasingly sold to Americans, Chinese, Swiss, Russian or Brazilian tycoons amongst others. All these millionaires (if not billionaires) are looking for new toys!

You might argue that the nationality of the owner is not important, it’s the team that is going to allow the tradition to stay and keep the know-how, continuing to make fine wine amateurs, to keep on dreaming. And if, thanks to this financial flow, our domains and châteaux continue to live and develop over time, at the same time providing jobs to men and women that produce this much sought after nectar, we will be able to thank all this foreign wealth.

But please don’t forget dear tycoon friends, that this heritage is ours, and can’t and should not under any circumstances be modified, destroyed or used for any other purpose than that it was designed for; making the best wine in the world.
