These two domaines, that were completely independent until that day, unite in 1960 to create a single domaine of about 5 hectares. Today domaine Zind-Humbrecht occupies 41,1 hectares, situated in 6 different villages: Turckheim (19,8 ha), Wintzenheim (7,3 ha), Hunawihr (6 ha), Thann (5,5 ha), Gueberschwihr (2,2ha), Niedermorschwihr (0,3 ha).

Since 1620 the Humbrecht family has passed from father to son the culture of growing the vineyard on the vast terroirs of Alsace.
Léonard Humbrecht will quickly adapt the fundamental principles of wine making: the use of big tuns, natural yeast and manual wine gathering… But the choice between the industrial and high-quality production shall be made with ease by domaine Zind Humbrecht.

In 1989 Olivier Humbrecht and his wife Margareth arrive. It was some sort of a new beginning for the domaine.
They decide to abandon Wintzenheim and move to Turckheim in 1992 where they build the state-of-the-art winery.

In their continuous search of high quality, the domaine obtains BIO certificate in 1998 and it’s exactly at that moment that they start to apply biodynamics.
But it doesn’t begin and end there, they get back to animal traction to preserve the soils and respect ancestral traditions in order to produce the outstanding-quality wine.
The wine selection is vast and the differences can be noticed from one village to another: we find a rather volcanic terroir in Thann, a granite one in Turckheim, a clay-limestone one in Hunawihr, or even a gypsum one for Clos Jebsal, et cetera…

Domaine Zind Humbrecht is now turning towards less concentrated wines in order to head to more harmonious nectars of incomparable quality!
Domaine Zind Humbrecht is on the list of must-visit vineyards of Alsace region!

They wish to find the ideal wine, in other words a “woman’s” wine, but that’s not all!
What could this wine be?

For the young woman under thirty it would be:

A rose, slightly sweet, fine and light for the aperitif or a light summer luncheon, such as a rose Bonbon from the Diables domain. A fine, dry white wine, very aromatic and lightly unctuous, this can be found in the Clos de la Coulée de Serrant, issued from the Nicolas Joly domain. We then propose an extremely aromatic red wine, with mellow tannins but nevertheless extremely warm, such as the Domaine de Pignan from the Chateauneuf-du-Pape vineyards. And to follow, a well-matured and very fresh brut rose Champagne, we suggest L’oeil de predrix from the Dehours domain.

For those aged between thirty and forty, they would be more inclined for:

A powerful and refined rose that is long in taste such as the Made in Provence, from the Domaine Saint Lucie. A mellow white wine, well balanced garnering beautiful freshness and fruity notes, such as the Clos Jesbal, Vendanges Tardives issued from the Zind-Humbrecht domain. An elegant red, with complex aromas like the Burgundy, Gevrey Chambertin 1er crus Les Champeaux, from the Alain Burguet domain. Finishing off with an exceptional white champagne Blanc de Blanc, extremely refined, with creamy bubbles that lingers magnificently in the mouth, such as the unique, Salon Champagne.

Women over their forties, the perfect age, based on experience, having understood the pros and cons of life and knowing how to enjoy it, will tend for:

A woody rose wine, with fine aromas and beautiful texture, wrapped up in a great length in the mouth, a Provence such as the Chateau d’Esclans from the Domaine Sacha Lichine is perfect. A brilliant white wine, having a complex bouquet, solid and well structured with a good acidity, with pure and mineral notes, a Burgundy such as the Corton-Charlemagne from the Georges Roumier domain. A red wine with the following characteristics; complex, lingering in taste, powerful and extremely elegant, a Burgundy such as the Echezeaux, Grand Cru from the Romanée Conti domain. And finally an absolute must, a Blanc de Blanc vintage champagne, capable of transmitting the flavors of an exceptional “terroir”, with a strong personality, of great quality and possessing a fabulous complexity, reflecting nature magnificently, this is perfectly illustrated by the incredible Jacques Selosse champagnes.

Well ladies, what do you think of all this?

Since 1984 the mention, Late Harvest, can be used on the wine labels issued from the Alsace vineyards.
This traditional expression means exceptional wines made from grapes that have been harvested as late as possible in the season in order to be over-ripe.
The development of Botrytis cinerea or colloquially known as “noble rot”, promotes the concentration of aromas and brings power and incomparable complexity to these soft and sweet wines.
But this wine appellation, must meet criteria that are among the toughest of all in the French AOC.
The vine must be harvested by hand; sugar addition is not permitted and must have less than 243 grams of sugar per liter if it is a Black Pinot, such as Zind – Humbrecht Clos Jebsal. For Gewurztraminer it will be less than 220 grams of sugar per liter if it’s a Riesling or a Muscat.

Late harvest wines are cut out to be aged, even for very long periods for patient wine lovers!
The 3 exceptional vintages of the century for the late harvest Pinot Gris are, 1945, 1959 and 1983. Closer to our times, the 2010 vintage will be excellent, moreover, it is a small harvest.
The preceding very good vintages are, 2005, 1999, 1994 and 1989, to be enjoyed now since they have reached maturity.
